The Silver Otter Cafe in Ottery Saint Mary is a welcoming spot where the pace slows down just enough to enjoy a solid coffee or the quintessential British tradition of afternoon tea. Situated on Silver Street, it fits comfortably into the town’s rhythm—serving locals and visitors who appreciate good coffee without fuss and a cozy atmosphere that nudges you to linger.

The cafe’s vibe is relaxed and friendly, popular with dog owners appreciating the fact it’s dog-friendly, and with those who value a sense of community; The Silver Otter actively supports local causes by employing adults with disabilities, adding to its genuine, down-to-earth character. You’ll often find a mix of early risers grabbing breakfast or coffee before heading to work, alongside people settling in for a quiet catch-up or a mid-morning retreat from the bustle outside.

There’s a casual charm in the service, consistently kind and patient, which feels like part of the cafe’s identity as much as its menu. Coffee here draws praise for its quality and reasonable pricing, making it a comfortable stop for anyone passing through or wanting a regular haunt. The traditional afternoon tea stands out as a menu highlight, attracting those who enjoy a classic slice of local life with homemade touches—cream teas especially get nods for their freshness and warmth.

One distinct feature that adds a touch of personality is the free jukebox, which quietly offers some background music that doesn’t overpower conversations but instead complements the easy-going atmosphere. This balance keeps the space lively without feeling crowded, especially on weekday mornings or calm weekend afternoons.

Visitors who appreciate a cafe with heart, where attention to kindness and quality meet without pretense, will find The Silver Otter a natural fit. It’s an inviting stop to pause—whether for a warm drink on a chilly day, a light breakfast, or an afternoon tea break after exploring the nearby town center and historic church.

*dog friendly* Lovely homemade cream teas, great coffee and the most welcoming staff. They employ adults with disabilities. This is the only coffee shop you need to visit. Support local, support a great cause. Recommend by TimeOut too!

A fantastic random find! We stumbled upon this gem while walking to the church. The coffee is hands down the best we've had in Devon, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. To top it all off, the service was super friendly, and they have a free jukebox. What's not to love? Highly recommend!

Great little coffee shop and tasty coffee. The staff are really friendly and they prize themselves on being a coffee shop for people with a wide range of disabilities and being able to assist in more ways making it an enjoyable experience for all. The food is all made locally and very tasty. Tables are all set out nicely and there is parking outside on the street. Take away coffees are also available.

What a lovely little place to come and have a cuppa and a sit down. Always greeted with a happy smile and cheerful staff, which is sometimes just what you need to make your day! Sometimes, we even treat ourselves to a milkshake and a yummy cake! Thank you so much for offering such a lovely service.

Great cafe in Ottery with some really nice lunch options, not too pricey and an inclusive staffing policy.
